Video Games Keep Me Up At Night

A good video game is just like  good book. You pressure your self to keep moving forward but try to hold back to enjoy the magnificent view. As the plot moves forward, you find value in returning to a familiar setting over and over but also excitement over new views. Even when you think it’s over, you see there are still chapters to finish and you hope it will magically keep going. The characters become yours and your friends or enemies. Looking at the clock finally, you realize you need to go to bed but instead you try to finish just a little more. Feeling tired in the morning doesn’t matter because when you get home, you’ll find yourself playing it till the morning once again.

There are games that grab you and shake you. WAKE UP! WAKE UP YOU FOOL!

FallOut 3 is one of those special games. When I play FallOut 3, I have to have at least a four hour block of time. I know that I won’t feel accomplished unless I’ve played at least that much. On work nights, I have to really watch myself otherwise it’s 1 am and I need to go to bed. The othernight I had Kane promise that he would help me. Then he went to bed and didn’t realize I played for a half an hour more. The next day he asked me how late I wound up being up. It was amazing it was only a half an hour more, so I considered it a promise kept.

Pokemon is another game I can play, lose track of time. If I don’t watch myself I wander the routes looking for stray Pokemon to capture. The sun will rise and set before I realize what I’ve been doing.

Why are these games so addictive though?

FallOut has a compelling story, interesting quests and an open world. I am definately an explorer. Pokemon has similar elements.

I think these games keep me up at night though because I get so involved that time doesn’t seem to matter. I want to keep working, exploring and building on the story as it unfolds in my version of the world. Sometimes I plow through them really quick and then play through a second time, slowly, taking my time to enjoy and savore the flavor.

These games are both part of successful series. Both have good writing, interesting characters and plenty of things to discover. I guess that’s what it takes to get me to stay up at night.

What games drive you to insomnia?

Wedding Anniversary

Kane and I have been married 7 years and been together for 12 years! The insanity of it all is beyond imaging. I can’t believe that much time has passed. We love each other more every day. We aren’t just husband and wife, we’re friends. Our interests overlap and we enable each other’s passions. That is how we make it work.

Our wedding was Alice in Wonderland themed. We were married by our dear friend dressed as the Chesire Cat. My Maid of Honor was the Unicorn and her daughter was our flower girl dressed as the door mouse.

To celebrate our anniversary, we spent Saturday with my parents. They bought us books and Lego Marvel. Sunday, we went to see Gaurdians of the Galaxy. After we had lunch there was so much time before the movie we played video games at Game Works. I tried Tekkan 6 for the first time. It’s been years since I’ve played. I love Tekkan and it was like getting back on a bike. We played the Taiko drum game together and made sweet music. It was a lot of fun.

He let me make weird Fallout references because we cut through the upper deck of the light rail tunnels on our way.

Just as we did 7 years ago, we are going to PAX. That was our honey moon. We were poor and some where around here is a video from Yahoo gaming. We were interviewed standing in line for Will Wheaton. I have yet to make it through a meet Will Wheaton line, a few years ago we gave up. That year they cut the line in front of me because he had to run to a DnD session. Then the next day it was cut infront of me because he had to go somewhere else. Both time we spent about 30 minutes… maybe more in line to be sent off on our merry way without so much as a hi! After a few more conventions, I gave up trying to meet him. Since then, I bump into him nearly every year ( except last year). I never realize it till afterwards when one of my friends point it out. My Mom still makes jokes about him being my nemesis like on Big Bang Theory.

We are so lucky to have found each other, 12 years ago. I hope we have so many more years together.

Sometime, I’ll tell you the crazy way we wound up together.

I have a cold. Thankfully it hit after the holidays. I’ve spent way too many holiday’s sick in bed. It’s great because you have time to just sit and veg… but you don’t want to do anything. At least, I don’t. While being sick I have done a great many nerdy things.

One year I was horribly ill and it had made me somewhat incontinent. I had bronchitis so bad they thought I had pleurisy from coughing so much. Turned out to just be a pulled muscle. I spent so many nights sleeping in an upright position on the couch. I couldn’t do anything but read. I managed to read the entire Watchman comics over three days while running a fever. Sadly, I think I need to go back and re-read it. There were parts that stuck with me, but also parts that I still find a blur.

I tend to think of being sick as time to be productive at enjoying myself… usually I get nothing done that I want too. I usually wind up sleeping or cleaning. A strange affectation of illness for me but also helpful at times.

Tonight, I think I am going to turn the heat up, curl und a blanket and play Pokemon X till I pass out. It shouldn’t take long either. Playing Pokemon is pretty relaxing. I tend to be a grinder. I like to capture new Pokemon and build up my party. Luckily they made it easier in the new game. The share exp is pretty awesome now that it works on your whole party.

Stay warm and safe East Coasters! I know the snow is coming down. Maybe you need a Little Inferno Play Set?

Good night!

My Loot Crate is here! YAY! I can’t wait to open it. We picked it up from our building’s front office. I actually opened it on the bus while running errands but we waited till we were home to take picutres of the UNCRATING!

The theme this month is Celebrate! It’s for partying and all the items inside help you celebrate.

That balloon has a police box on it. This goes with the sticker in celebration of the Day of the Doctor! That takes care of the decorations. The wallet is for money. You need that to drink right? I think it’s funny that it’s a Batman wallet. I love Batman. Kane and I spent a good part of yesterday playing Batman the Lego video game. That game is hilariously bad. At one point I was playing Robin and I had on magnetic boots. Batman had on a glide suit. Who is more practical in factory where is everything is made of raised platforms made of metal.

This is a mini-speaker. It’s pretty cool and battery operated. That takes care of the music. Kane’s going to use it at work. His speakers are starting to go bad.

Cards are for games! Let’s play poker. Poker? I don’t even know her.

There we go… Shot glass and drink. Eat, drink and be merry. I love it. This shot glass is going with the collection. We have a bunch from all over the place and we also have one with a skull inside. You pour in the drink and it fills the skull.

Finally, they included my member card.

WOOT! It was a good box this month. They also included a coupon to get more of that breakfest drink.

Sometimes I read children’s and young adult books for fun. I mean, children know everything there is about fun right? I read them because I need something that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Other time, I read them because I want to see what the hubbub is all about. A word which here means, “what everyone  else is talking about.”

Lemony Snicket’s new book series is delightfully strange, much like a Series of Unfortunate Events. The new series actually focuses on himself. The main character is Lemony Snicket as a child.

Lemony Snicket picks the worst Chaperon to study under within his secret organization. They are assigned to help Mrs. Sallis, of Stained-by-the-Sea, obtain a lost object. While Snicket is trying to follow his chaperon’s instructions, he’s also trying to find a way to get back to the city and help a mysterious friend of his. Quickly, it turns out this is not a clear cut case of a stolen object. Snicket finds himself on his own with a threatening character named, Hangfire popping up behind a kidnapping and other dark happenings in the inky town of Stained-by-the-Sea. Will Snicket be able to return a lost statue and help his friend in the city?  Maybe those are the wrong questions.

All The Wrong Questions gives you an insight into the world behind A Series of Unfortunate Events. The characters are all children, well the characters that matter. The adults are all impatient, don’t listen or are absent.  You meet Moxie Mallahan, an aspiring and inquisitive (a word meaning to ask a lot of questions), reporter; Ellington Feint who has an interest in music and wants to find her kidnapped Father; and Pip and Squeak, twin brothers that help their Dad by driving the taxi. All the characters are distinct with quirks that help you like or distrust them instantly. The author uses internal monologue to move the story forward at a fast pace. Even though his books are 200 pages, they could be read in a few hours by a faster reader. You never know exactly where the story is going to take you. Most of the time you think you are going to wind up back in the hotel with your chaperon but you end up on an abandoned street with no houses.

I love Mr. Snicket’s writing style (aka Daniel Handler). He is humorous, intelligent and never talks down to his target audience. When he throws in unknown vocabulary he always explains the meaning of the word. If you have young adult readers, give them these books. They are full of fun and mystery; independent kids and clueless adults; and vocabulary building tools.

I would recommend this book to anyone. The second book, All The Wrong Questions: “When Did You See Her Last” just came out in September.

At Geek Girl Con we found an awesome vendor selling video game related soap, Digital Soaps.

Sounds awesome right? You have no idea.

Chrystal Doucette, is the founder of Digital Soaps and we talked for a while. She is charismatic, friendly and really open to questions about her cool products. We were impressed because on first glance, her soaps looked like the real game cartridges. There were soaps of all sizes and game systems. We purchased a Chrono Trigger cartridge that is Mt. Dew Scented in fact. Yesterday I handed it to my Mother and said I bought a new game. She tried to feign interest reading the tag. Then Kane and I laughed because she commented that something smelled really nice. Even she was amazed by how much they look like the real cartridge.

I also bought a deliciously smelling Pokeball. The scent is Strawberry Rhubarb pie. The ball looks like a Pokeball. According to Chrystal, there is a surprise Pokemon in each one. I can’t wait to find out what I bought. I will have to post an update after I’ve rubbed it all over enough to expose my POKEMON! I CHOOSE YOU… to wash the filth from my body and make me smell nice.

As a bonus she gave us a Mario star. It’s citrus scented.

Digital Soaps had other products I wanted but I thought I should start with two first. I am a little bit of a girly girl  at times and I have a back log of handmade soaps. There was one that looked like a PlayStation controller.  I really want the buy that next. She had a variety of scents that included Dr. Pepper and A&W Root-beer. She suggested getting the shampoo when she found out I have a pile of soaps. Her product line is very diversified. She makes body washes, soaps, lotion, hand sanitizer, shampoo and conditioners. One of the really unique items she makes is CAFFEINATED SHAMPOO. Yeah, you read that right. If you need to rise and shine, rinse and repeat.

Another really cool item are the Tetris soaps. I just like the idea of being able to display them before I use them.

If you really like bacon, but don’t want to rub yourself all over with it, try her soap. She makes a vegan bacon soap. They come in either dark chocolate or bacon scent.

These are great gift items. I smell holiday shopping ideas!

Check out her Etsy shop or her website.
