My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has some fantastic references in their show. Some of the show references are subtle, some are in your face blatant. Some of my favorites are references to the original My Little Pony but I’m going to talk about some of the pop culture references  that have appeared. They also name many of the episodes after movies and tv shows, like the Secret of My Excess is named after a Michael J Fox movie, The Secret of My Success.

These are my favorite episode references:

10. Three’s a Crowd (S4, E 11)

In “Three’s A Crowd”  there are to many references to mention. My favorite is when Discord turns into Raoul Duke from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is such an inappropriate reference for a children’s show but at the same time, they won’t know till their older. If you haven’t heard of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it was written by Hunter S. Thompson. The story was based loosely off drug bings and experiments with LSD. Knowing Discord is the embodiment of chaos, it fits that he would turn into this particular character.

9. Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 (S2, E15)/ Slice of Life – (S5 E9) for Time Turner

There is a back ground character named Time Turner. The fans have dubbed him Dr. Whooves. He was so popular fans started writing Dr. Whooves fan fiction and animating their own cartoons. In the episode “Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000,” the creators actually let him turn the time piece in the competition between Apple Jack and the Flim/Flam brothers. The fan community went insane. They lost their minds! I was pretty excited myself. In Episode 100, he has a major part of the episode. It was adorable and he wore the Tom Baker scarf. There were so many Dr. Who references, including his lab!

HAPPY 2015!

Last year was weird and crazy for us. I can’t say that it was all good or all bad but whatever it was, it was interesting all the way. There were many bumps in the road but we got through them.

This year is going to be amazing. There are some great nerdy things happening right now. Lots of fantastic books, television, movies and games are coming out this year. Here is a list of things I am looking forward to:

Cartoons:
1. My Little Pony Season 5
2. Bravest Warriors Season 3
3. The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Television
1. Constantine
2. 12 Monkeys
3. Gotham ( aka the Penguin show!)

Games:
1. MONSTER HUNTER 4 ULTIMATE!!!!!!!

Movies
1. Jupiter Ascending – Mila Kunis stars in this movie.
2. Fifty Shades of Gray… haha Not! Just kidding. This looks like tripe.
3. What We Do In The Shadows – Mockumentary about vampires by the Flight of the Concords people.
4. Chappie – This is by the director of District 9. If that wasn’t enough, Die Antwood act in the movie.
5. Mad Max: Fury Road – Watch the trailer, it’s what sold me on the idea of this movie.

Books: Well… these came out last year or before but I am just reading them now.
1. Prince Lestat
2. Doctor Sleep – Seriously… the sequel to “The Shinning.” This is a must read.
3. The Wolf Gift

We are also seriously still into Legos in my house. We have a bunch of new sets to build and some older ones we just purchased. We’re planning to go to Brick Con and if we can get to California, Lego Land.

Here’s to a wonderful year to come.

Life in a Box: Consumable Geek

Is “Geek Culture” just about conspicuous consumption?

There is a weird discussion going on in the community right now about what is “Geek Culture.”  Some people out there are trying to say that if we stopped buying stuff that geek culture wouldn’t exist. Defining a culture can be a difficult matter because some people have variations. Let’s figure out some common things that Geeks share.

1. A love of something very much, sincerly. ( Edited after speaking with a friend. It’s a way better definition! Thank you!)

2. Passionate about some variety of science fiction or fantasy. This can be anything from video games, movies, tv shows, print, music, role playing games, board games, card games, war games or comics.

3. Technophiles of some sort. This can be any kind of electronic device.

Once you have these three basics, there are so many different kinds of geek I could go on for days.

As a geek what do you do? You do consume the media you derive your geekdom from. Is our whole culture about that though? Entire economies have been derived off our passions. Let’s take video games for example.

completevic20

There are major conventions in the US for gaming and gaming technology. There is Penny Arcade Expo ( PAX) and Graphics, Gagdets and Games (G3 Expo). These are argueably the largest gaming conventions in the industry. They do drive us into a frenzy about the new games but… I think most of us have Steam. I know personally, wait till games go on sale during the BIG sales before I go on a binge. Gaming companies do generate millions of dollars but not everyone that plays games are geeks. You can’t say that the gaming industry would vanish if there wasn’t a geek culture. Look Candy Crush for instance. Everyone from children to grandparents play that horrific monstrosity. They buy add ons and pump money into a game about CANDY. The industry spends millions of dollart to go to the conventions and show you the games. They give you the swag ( t-shirts, toys, stickers, inflatable meat). Then they send you back out into the world to drool for months waiting for the games.

Let’s talk about Anime for a moment. There are different types of anime geeks. There are the ones that watch anime, there are the ones that only read manga and then there are cosplayers. Within the different subcultures you have lots of gray areas. Cosplayers are often not pumping money into a company that supplies cosplay costumes. They support the fabric stores, hardware stores and craft stores in their areas, but that purchasing power doesn’t make them geeks. It’s that love of dressing up as Sakura or Eren Jaeger that make them a Geek! If they had no money, they would find a way to do it anyway with sheets and drapes, Gone With the Wind style. So many shows are on Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, torrents or at your RedBox, video store or used video store that the money doesn’t always factor into our love. For instance, I watched Black Butler, but I bought the blueray used.

Geeks meeting up and talking at a convention... you might recognize Kane and I in the middle.

Geeks meeting up and talking at a convention… you might recognize a few of us.

We definately don’t go out and buy every game, item, T-Shirt or mini that exist. Maybe some of us do but, the vast majority of us don’t do that. We tend to specialize in something and go crazy for one or two things.

I… love love love My Little Pony. Even though I am passionate about my fillies, I don’t buy every product put out. Just… a few of them. This was a gift from my husband. YES!

IMG_20121225_231753

Most of us are too poor to buy EVERYTHING. Even if the things weren’t there we would be sitting around talking about dragons and laser guns. We would be discussing who shot first. We would be talking about how cool it would be to own a proton pack. There would be ways to show our love for video games too… we could rent them from Gamefly or a video store and then return them. We could even return them in better condition than when we rented them. Or we could share… one person coud by the game and pass it around.

My conclusion is, before there was stuff, I still had dice and friends. It doesn’t matter that I now have a matching t-shirt and logo sticker. We would still have our imaginations and DRAGONS.

Apple Jack is left by herself to tend the farm while Grannie Smith and Big Mac are out on an errand. Apple Jack is gaurding a GIANT apple that will be entered in a contest in Appleloosa. She enlists the help of her friends to deal with the fruit bat problem that’s been growing since the Apple family reunion.

ReadingBat

This episode can be taken so many ways. For me, it felt like they were trying to talk about balancing the need of modern agriculture to balance with the needs of naturally occuring species. Fluttershy brings up several times that the bats in the frield are trying to provide for their families and doing only what comes natural. Everyone is reminded over and over that the bats are not doing this maliciously. Apple Jack is so worked up and worried about the giant apple though that the gang falls in line to help her keep the bats from eatting apples. This episode also seems to be about taking time to listen to your friends before rushing into hasty actions. Twilight uses the same spell she tried on the parasprites. This time it works and the bats no longer want to eat apples. Unfortunately someone got in the way as they rounded up the bats, Fluttershy.

The ladies find that their friend Fluttershy is a more fearsome foe as she has become a WERE BAT!

The episode was alot of fun. They have a silly song and an adorable Flutterbat.

Not a lot to say about this episode but… I wonder what is going to happen to Fluttershy. I don’t think they cured her completely.

Elements Assemble!

The Power Ponies episode is about Spike and his insecurities. Always in the background, Spike identifies with a character from a comic book named Hum Drum. The comic book is enchanted and  the Mane six, along with Spike get sucked into the pages. Living the lives of super ponies they learn they have to deal with the Mane-iac in order to get out of the comic book.

I have never seen so many leaked scenes from an episode before. Even before the season started there were leaked Power Ponies photos floating around. The Royal Wedding didn’t have as much leaked material. We all knew the episode was coming but I wasn’t prepared for it to be so well written and fun. They didn’t actually ruin the story any so, I guess it’s alright. The over all feel of the episode is similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Batman: The Animated Series. The Mane-iac is a combination of the Joker and the Creeper. She was actually created when she fell into a vat of chemicals and then being electrocuted. This accident brought her hair to life and it grows out of control. The Mane-iac’s hair can move on its own and is used as a weapon.

Creeper

The Creeper and his hair cape. Weird…

Spike winds up as the bumbling side-kick Hum Drum. He’s less than thrilled because every time he gets a chance to help them and win the day he screws it up. None of the accidents are on purpose but seem to be related to his self-consciousness. The issue of Spike has always been part of the show. He is alone in the world and still trying to find his identity.  In the series there have been several episodes that deal with Spike’s insecurities. The first was “A Dog and Pony Show,” where Spike wants to save Rarity so badly. He imagines himself as a big brawny Knight and rides in to save Rarity. This is confronting his Mickey Rourke syndrome, being self-conscious about being small. Then in the second season “Owl’s Well That Ends Well” has Spike feeling like he could be replaced by anyone. Twilight does eventually manage to reassure him that no one could ever replace him in her life. In Season Two, we also see dragon nature in “Secret of My Excess,” which confronts their tendency towards greed. He finds that he’s trying too hard to grow up and decides to slow things down again. The episode also shows that Spike has incredible willpower and can over come anything. They also have “Dragon Quest,” where Spike decides to get back to his roots. He follows the Dragon migration and hangs out with teenagers of his own kind for a while. In the end he decides that his friends are better than trying to hard to fit in with people who don’t share his values. Season Three, has three great Spike episodes even though it’s a short season, starts with “The Crystal Empire.” Spike’s loyalty is on full display as he saves Twilight and the Crystle Ponies by insisting on accompanying his friend.  “Spike at Your Service” also covers issues of loyalty and duty. He finally learns that you shouldn’t do things because you feel you have to but because you like helping your friends. “Just for Side Kicks” wound up being more about not lying, fulfilling your promises and not being greedy. With the help of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, he managed to discover he was being a lousy babysitter. This new episode is just another character building moment where he learns about how important he really is to the gang.

Kids will get a great message from the episode. How many times have we felt like a fish out of water? Good friends need diversity and sometimes you have a talent that seems ordinary but is extraordinary after all. Now back to the Bat Cave!

Holy hoofed heroines Batman!

Apple Jack was Mistress Mare-volus which is a version of Wonder Woman. They have a magic lasso and magic handcuffs. If we had gone any longer there probably would have been an invisible vehicle

Fluttershy was Saddle RAGER! It’s hilarious that she is the She-Hulk rip off because she does have a temper. In this episode she has a hard time really digging into her inner aggression. That is until a little tiny Fire Fly is harmed by the Mane-iac.

Pinkie Pie was Fili-Second. Can you say Flash? Yes, she’s the Flash rip off and hilarious. It was like watching elements of “Too Many Pinkie’s” all over again.

Rainbow Dash became Zapp. Her special powers had to do with elemental and weather control. She was like Storm but her outfit reminded me of Black Lightning.

Black_lightning_nowlan

Old Black Lightning

Rarity was transformed into Radiance. She could make anything from the energy in her accessories. This was a lot like the Green Lantern’s ability.

Twilight wound up as Masked Matter-Horn. Her powers were an energy beam from her horn that was like Cyclops’ eye beam. Her outfit though reminded me of the Phantom.

Phantomcomics2

The Phantom in his awesome purple cat suit.

Spike as Hum Drum was an obvious Robin riff. I can’t stop alliterating.

The back ground goons were fantastic. They had one that looked like Tony P of the Disco Boys! If you haven’t seen Mystery Men, you should. Tony P was played by Eddie Izzard and at one point he uses hair spray as a weapon. Compare, I swear they are the same character.

MM-TonyP-GodOfHaircare 640px-Henchpony_spraying_S4E06

The episode was definately a nod to the fans. There were elements from classic comic books like the overly elaborate death trap and likenesses to pop culture. I enjoyed it enormously. Some people are calling it pandering to the Bronies. I don’t think there was anything about the episode that couldn’t work on two levels. Adults and children would enjoy this Adam West Batmanesque escapade. Really what this shows is the writers understand their audience and can have a variety of episode styles. They go from action to narrative type story lines very well. They all tie together some how and the continuity will not be lost. I am sure some where later on the issue of the enchanted comic book store will come up again. I really hope it does because at the end of the episode the comic book disappears. How mysterious.

In the end, the day was saved again, by the POWER PONIES and Hum Drum!

What ever happen to the song Toys R Us used to use. You know what I mean. ” I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys R Us Kid.” Well… here’s a ling to a video. (And here are those kids 14 years later. Sorry for the terrible quality, it’s the only one I could find.)

Yeah I know, I am an adult. I go to Toys R Us for a few things Legos, My Little Ponies and now Skylanders. There is nothing that says you have to have a child or be a child to shop there. Yet, when I go there people give me the stink eye.

This Christmas was especially awkward. Kane and I were at a Toys R Us to purchase a gift for a friend and his daughter. After we picked that out we moseyed over to the My Little Pony section to see what Toys R Us exclusive figures they had and found blind bag ponies! I spent a bit checking codes and digging through the bags for some of the Wonderbolts figures I needed. Gawking at all the neat toys and figures. A lady asked my why they had a scary pony named Nightmare Moon. Without missing a beat I explained that “Nightmare Moon is the form that Princess Luna takes before the Elements of Harmony bring her back from the dark side.”

Now, I wasn’t expecting anyone to be impressed but she was more weirded out. She said her daughter probably would have explained that no problem. She joked about being a bad parent or something and I assured her that it was not that. I just watch the show. They passed by and then we bumped into each other looking at the Monster High dolls.

Monster High is the favorite topic of discussion for my friend’s adorable daughter, Sheeny. Sometimes I babysit her and it’s the only thing we can talk about or we play with her dolls. It’s better to know when I am doing so she doesn’t get disappointed when I don’t know Cleo is an evil mummy girl and that Draculara is a vegan. While doing my duty as the coolest babysitter ever, I watched the show and I keep track of the dolls coming out. They are pretty cool actually. Well the lady laughed and asked if we were following them. I blushed and said no with an awkward laugh. Then she asks me, “How old is your daughter?”

This stopped me in my tracks. I want kids very badly but Kane and I are having problems in that department. Honestly, I don’t know if we will ever conceive. If it is possible, which I hope it will be in the next year, we will have as many children as we can. Two would be fine with me… or even just one.

I admitted, we were buying the ponies for me. That I am a collector and have loved My Little Pony since I was five. The couple was very weirded out by this fact. I spent a few awkward minutes explaining I was looking at the Monster High Dolls because of Sheeny. That made them feel a little less weird. Then she asked me, openly and honestly out of curiosity, “Do you play with them?” I laughed, no I don’t play with them. “Do you just keep them in the package.” I took a bit to explain that I put them on display but I don’t play with them. Even if I did… ( ok sometimes I have been known to play with them) there is nothing wrong with that. Who am I harming by having these toys?

Sometimes I forget about the real world outside the fandom. Sometimes I forget that some people don’t live in a place where it’s ok to be a little immature or still like toys or play video games. Back in October I asked my Mom, “Did you ever think you would still be buying me toys?” She laughed and said, no. She had never expected this. I guess I don’t really understand why not.

There are ALWAYS collectors. Without the collectors we wouldn’t know so much about the toys of yesteryear. Even if you aren’t a collector, it’s still OKAY to appreciate cartoons, toys and games. It doesn’t mean I am a weirdo or a pedophile.

Alright, I am going to go play Skylanders now. The game is marketed to kids but it’s really well crafted. The models are COOL and the game is harder than it looks.

Episode three of My Little Pony: Friendship is magic was a hilarious romp through an abandoned castle in the middle of the Everfree forest.

Twilight is looking for information about the mysterious chest found at the Tree of Harmony. Nothing in the library in Ponyville has any information. Celestia suggests she search the old library at the Castle of the Two Sisters. This was the original seat of power for Equestria so it makes sense. Spike and Twilight head out to the castle without telling their friends.

Meanwhile, Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash are in a “Most Daring Pony” competition with Pinkie Pie keeping score. They decide that the tie breaker after the bee stare should be staying in the abandoned castle over night.

Rarity asks Fluttershy to come with her to the castle because she wants to pull down some tapestries and textiles. Under the auspices of restoring the textiles and getting inspiration, Rarity maintains it’s a purely professional motivation behind her trip. Fluttershy is of course reluctant.

In this fashion, all the ponies, except Pinkie Pie wind up wandering the crumbling halls of the castle.

It’s also STAR SPIDER SEASON! RUN IN TERROR.

The episode is funny, everyone is running around the castle and no one knows anyone else is there. It’s very Laurel and Hardy meet Frankenstein or a Three Stooges movie. They keep bumping into each other sending the other group running away in terror. Everyone is telling scary stories and thinking that the other group is the Pony of Shadows! You even get to see a creepy hall way with disembodied pony arms!

This whole time Twilight is reading in the Library. She found a diary in a secret room that was kept by Luna and Celestia. The story is framed by Twilight reading from the book and ends when Twilight discovers her friends all freaked out in the main hall. They realize that they’ve just been scaring one another.

I am really enjoying the story arc this season. I can’t wait to find out what is in the box. WHAT’s IN THE BOX!

EQGIrlsDVD

I am a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. This show is math. Growing up I loved the original My Little Pony. I still have my original Apple Jack. Needless to say, that was the 1980’s and everything was different back then. Animation didn’t really work on two levels. You either had a cartoon for adults or a cartoon for a certain age demographic of children. There were no in between cartoons at the time.

(Although, cartoons were originally created for adults. Reference Betty Boop.)

The new My Little Pony was developed by Lauren Faust. Her previous projects include the brilliant Power Puff Girls, Code Name Kids Next Door and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. These cartoons work on two levels, there are jokes kids just won’t get. She also makes a Big Lebowski reference in each one of her shows.  (Fosters ; MLP: FIM ; Powerpuff). I knew My Little Pony was going to be awesome, and it is. Then they came out with the summer movie that bridged the season break, Equestria Girls.

There had been rumors for a long time about this movie. A secret show  was being developed involving the ponies as humans in high school was being developed. Drama ensued on the Facebook and fan pages for My Little Pony. Everyone was up in arms that they would change our ponies into human girls! How dare they!

The movie was released in theaters and on DVD as short time afterwards. Slowly, the community took a chance and were won over. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls has been embraced by the community. Here is the plot.

Twilight Sparkle is having a hard time adjusting to becoming an princess. When she is asked to meet up in the Crystal Empire with Celestia, Luna and Cadence, Twilight’s crown is stolen. The thief, Sunset Shimmer, takes the crown through a portal to another realm. Celestia owns up to knowing the thief. Sunset Shimmer was Celestia’s former student gone evil and banished to the other realm for her own good. Celestia sends Twilight Sparkle through the portal with Spike but none of her other friends. On the other side of the portal Twilight Sparkle learns she has to win the crown as part of the fall formal. To do so, she needs to reunite the fragmented social groups of then entire school and get back through the portal before the moon changes!

EquestriaGirlsCharacters

I bought this on DVD and I don’t regret it. The music is great, the story actually works really well. The movie has the same great story telling and characterization and voice acting that the MLP:FIM has. It was like watching a long episode of the show! It was also fun trying to pick out the different characters in their human forms. Everyone looked so familiar! There were a number of cameos. My favorites were Derpy in the lunch room and Trixie at the vending machine.

The fans were hilarious when this came out because Twilight Sparkle gets a boyfriend. Turns out he has a pony version on the other side of the portal. He’s the new palace guard named Flash Sentry. Thousands of Bronies had their hearts broken. No one wants to accept she might have a love interest in the new season. Oh boys. She’s not your waifu!

I loved this movie. I also used it while babysitting to occupy my friends daughter. It was awesome, she stared at the TV comatose. She loves Monster High and she just couldn’t handle the excitement because the character figures are really similar to Monster High. She enjoyed it as well. Watch it with your kids or younger siblings!

The new season of MLP: FIM starts at the end of November.
