Coming back

Earlier this year I gave myself a concussion. I never realized how long it would take me to fully recover. Even after the doctor telling me to do nothing for a week, there was a part of me that doubted it would take that long. Weeks after I was still having issues with dizzy spells, random headaches and fatigue. Seven months later, I still have some symptoms, my neck randomly gets tight and gives me a headache at the back of my neck. It’s slowly becoming less of an issue though.

My recovery was seriously hampered by, first of all my stubborness and secondly stress. There were lots of outside factors that slowed my recovery time. I wasn’t supposed to use a computer, use my phone, watch tv, play video games or even read. I could listen to quiet music and talk to people. NOT PEOPLE! I definately went back to work to quickly, after only three days. The doctor didn’t want me to do anything for a week. During this time, I slept a lot. I also started writing ( but that was stolen from my parents car!)

Once I thought I was good and ready to work on the blog again, I suddenly had pneumonia. That took several weeks to recover from and still shows in my lungs on x-ray. Then, I was finally not exhausted all the time and wisdom teeth started bothering me. About three weeks of pain insued. I had the offending tooth removed but again, as I recovered all I wanted to do was sleep. When I wasn’t sleeping, I was practicing or performing with my band. Yeah… that kind of hurts when you are singing. Now we are good to go again. Healthy enough to blog finally.

I missed writing the blog so much. Kane is my husband and he was taking care of me through out all of this. Please excuse our abscense because well… life happened. We are finally in a place to move forward with the blog. In the next few weeks there will be so many EXCITING nerdy things to talk about.

We have tickets to PAX and Geek Girl Con. We’re also planning to attend Brick Con in October. Lot’s of Kickstarters are coming in and we still get a monthly LOOT CRATE!

Both Kane and I are excited to start the blog up again. The plan is to have daily posts on a variety of topics. I’m going to resume my “Coming Attractions”  blog that talks about movies coming out in the next week, next month and next year.

My Little Pony is still a love of mine. I’ll be posting all the new gossip and any updates we discover along the path.

In the past few weeks we dug through all our video games. You’ll see a lot of retro game reviews in the future.

Either way, there will be a ton of content to plow through. I can’t wait to hear from all of you about our articles, to discuss all the nerdy things.

Yours Truly,

The Holidays are here… or almost over if you celebrate Hanukkah. Sorry! I didn’t get this up soon enough for Hanukkah shopping. I’ve got some lovely holiday gifts and stocking stuffer ideas for your friends and family.

1. Digital Soaps – I blogged about these soaps previous by they are a great gift for the gamer in your life. Plus, you are supporting a small business run through Etsy. These soaps from $5.00 to $78.00 for a complete set of controller shaped soaps. They also have a Dragon Ball set for $44.00.

3. The Hunger Games Book set  – The trilogy that inspired the movie, authored by Suzanne Collins. Read more about Katniss Everdean and the world of the Hunger Games.

4. The Divergent Trilogy – Soon to be a movie, the freshman release by Veronica Roth, Divergent is about Tris Prior’s decision to leave her family. On every child’s 16th birthday they have to take a test and then choose between one of the 5 factions that form their world or become factionless. Tris has a problem though, she doesn’t pass the test. The test doesn’t say anything about her at all meaning she is Divergent. She can’t tell anyone her secret.

5. The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Books – There are some AMAZING special sets out there. Barnes and Nobel has several different leather bound editions of both the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

6. Loot Crate – A monthly gift for those you love. It’s a box of random geeky items for $13.37 a month, plus shipping. Here are some of the cool things I’ve received.

7. Lego Video Games – These games run between $20.00 to $40.00 dollars depending on how new they are. The majority of them fall into the $20.00 range. I recommend Lego Pirates of the Carribean, Batman, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. These can all be found for $20.00.

8. Lego Sets – Lego has a bunch of small sets for between $10.00 – $25.00. I’ve built a few of them myself like Bilbo getting the ring from Gollum. This little set is $10.00. They have a bunch of sets like this for the Lone Ranger, Star Wars, Teen Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles and many many more.

Random 175 Random 174 Random 173

9. Wil Wheaton shirts – has a parasitic relationship with Wil Wheaton. Right now they have several shirts and things designed by him.

10. Lego Necklaces! – You can make these at home. Go to your Lego store or online and by two lego coupling plates. Glue them together if you want, otherwise just lock them together. The jump rings go through the hole at the top and you attach a chain, cord or ribbon to the jump rings. Here is a tutorial I found so you can see what I am talking about.

Loot Crate: Celebrate!

My Loot Crate is here! YAY! I can’t wait to open it. We picked it up from our building’s front office. I actually opened it on the bus while running errands but we waited till we were home to take picutres of the UNCRATING!

Cellphone I take to many photos 227

The theme this month is Celebrate! It’s for partying and all the items inside help you celebrate.

Cellphone I take to many photos 229Here is a look at the goodies!

That balloon has a police box on it. This goes with the sticker in celebration of the Day of the Doctor! That takes care of the decorations. The wallet is for money. You need that to drink right? I think it’s funny that it’s a Batman wallet. I love Batman. Kane and I spent a good part of yesterday playing Batman the Lego video game. That game is hilariously bad. At one point I was playing Robin and I had on magnetic boots. Batman had on a glide suit. Who is more practical in factory where is everything is made of raised platforms made of metal.

This is a mini-speaker. It’s pretty cool and battery operated. That takes care of the music. Kane’s going to use it at work. His speakers are starting to go bad.

Cards are for games! Let’s play poker. Poker? I don’t even know her.

Cellphone I take to many photos 238 Cellphone I take to many photos 234

There we go… Shot glass and drink. Eat, drink and be merry. I love it. This shot glass is going with the collection. We have a bunch from all over the place and we also have one with a skull inside. You pour in the drink and it fills the skull.

Finally, they included my member card.

Cellphone I take to many photos 236

WOOT! It was a good box this month. They also included a coupon to get more of that breakfest drink.

Kane and I get a monthly subscription box called Loot Crate so we started looking around to see what else is available. We found another company based out of Canada called The Nerd Block. I was initially very excited because the month I chose to try out the Nerd Block had Adventure Time merch included. Nerd Block has corporate partners including Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Nintendo and Adventure Time. Not sure how this partnership works on their end though.

Cellphone I take to many photos 172

The subscription is $19.99 a month plus shipping. Every month includes a t-shirt. If you need a plus size T-Shirt they charge extra. With everything together, I wound up paying $31.00 US.

The shipping took longer than I expected. To the US it’s usually 4-6 days but mine took more like 10-14 days. They also ruined the surprise by having to post the contents on the outside of the package. There was a huge customs label that said exactly what was included in the package. The packaging was pretty spiffy though. They had the box inside a really sturdy brown cardboard box. It protected the actual box amazingly well, which was flimsy light weight card stock.

Cellphone I take to many photos 170

Once I opened the external packaging, I was eager to see what the described contents looked like.

Cellphone I take to many photos 173

The T-Shirt was an Adventure Time shirt. I love Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors, so this was a win.

Cellphone I take to many photos 178

They included a Funco Edward Scissorhands plushy. I love him. I will whisper to him sweetly at night and let him know it’s ok. Just don’t cut me and everything will be alright. They also included Funco brand paper models. These were Iron Man models. I gave them to Kane. He loves paper minis. I think it’s rather humorous they include Funco since they are a local company.

A Mario star was in the box. It turned out to be a squishy, foam, stress ball type thing. I actually like this little novelty more and more each day. I may have to bring it to work.

Cellphone I take to many photos 179

They also included a generic looking, chibi Batman key chain and some sticky wall crawler aliens.

Cellphone I take to many photos 177 Cellphone I take to many photos 175

I expected a little more from my subscription box because I had paid so much. I realize that things are different in Canada, but I don’t feel like I really got my money’s worth from the box. Also, I can’t explain it really but it didn’t have much soul to it. They felt like things in a box. I didn’t get super excited about anything they had included.

Looking at other people’s reviews of the Nerd Block, they don’t really change much from Month to month. There is always a T-Shirt which is cool but then they throw in some figures. Bam… that’s what they do.

The internet had lots of reviews of the box, but I don’t really see a community either. If you can point me to one, please let me know.

Just a little disappointed. It’s a decent product though.

My cats liked it though. They’ve claimed the box in the name of catdom!

GGC Legos Suvival Loot Crate 077

YAY! The new Loot Crate arrived. This week’s theme is Survival. By survival, they mean surviving the zombie apocalypse. I was excited to see what they gave us to help survive the apocalypse. Here is their guide. They have a list of their favorite 5 zombie movies. I haven’t seen the last one, Zombie Girl. I think I need to check that out.

Opening the box they provided clothing.

I dislike Ewoks. They are cute, sure… but they ruin a really solid Star Wars movie. Return of the Jedi would have been so awesome with Wookies instead.  The shirt is a 2x but looks HUGE. Will be a comfy, rainy day shirt. With the shirt was a coupon for money off from Graphic Lab, the company that made this awesome shirt.

Next were pins, a gummy spider and temporary tattoos. The tattoos are a zombie bite and a not infected bar code.

GGC Legos Suvival Loot Crate 084

They gave us a zombie hunting license. This is absolutely necessary for keeping yourself safe and right.

GGC Legos Suvival Loot Crate 085

Did you see the movie about a Zombie that falls in love with a human?

Finally, the last treasure is a guide to survival, the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. A great book to have when it all goes down. Excited for next months box!

Kane bought me a subscription to Loot Crate for my birthday. It was so sweet of him because he knew I could never rationalize getting this subscription for myself. What is Loot Crate?

Loot Crate is a subscription box. Every month for $13.37 plus shipping ($6.00), you receive a box of nerdy things. Usually there is a t-shirt included by my first box instead had something else epic. They pick a theme and then try and get the best nerdy stuff to put into the box.

We heard about this at PAX. We went to a panel about making your nerd passion into your nerd living. It was a really interesting panel that gave me a number of ideas but also made me a little CRAZY about Loot Crate.

People love Loot Crate so much that they take videos of themselves opening their boxes. They also take pictures, tweet, Tumblr, Flickr and every social media thing you can image about their Loot Crates.

Here is my very first Loot Crate.

Opening the box, they have instructions about how to experience your box.

They included a really awesome book talking about each item. I love it because of the Turtles. This theme was cartoons. Kane and I had a chance to meet Kevin Eastman at PAX this year. The fact that there was TMNT in the box made me incredibly satisfied with my life. In 1989 my Dad took me to see the TMNT movie in Bennington, Vermont. It sticks out in my mind because we were living in Hoosick Falls, NY at the time. Hoosick Falls is a small town and their main theater was a drive in. The theater in Bennington gave my Dad his change in silver dollars. He gave me the change and I still have that Silver Dollar in my coin collection. Raphael was my favorite turtle and Kevin Eastman said that Raph was his as well. J   SQUEE!

Blog 10 06 13 431

The first thing I saw after moving the book was a Pop Vinyl figure of Leonardo. I love him. I haven’t taken him out of his box. He’s going to stay in the box for now.

Blog 10 06 13 428

Second thing I saw was REN! Ren screams when you squeeze him and he has googley eyes. The tag says talking but… mostly he screams. He is super soft. I always expected Ren to be more rough and bristly. My friends used to come over on Saturday in highschool. We would crowd around the tv and watch Nicktoons and Cartoon Network all night. We all loved Ren and Stimpy. To this day I can still sing the Royal Canadian Yak song, Log and Don’t Wiz on the Electric fence.

Blog 10 06 13 427

Then there was a box with the Simpson’s logo on it. I was excited. I love key chains. Right now, I am sporting a Billy Idol key chain from his HAPPY BIRTHDAY concert in Seattle. It was amazing. Back to the Simpson’s. The box had a Groundskeeper Willy key chain included. I adore him. His character is so weird.

Blog 10 06 13 434

There was lip-gloss in the box. What the deuce? Sadly, this is the one item I can’t use. I have a cinnamon allergy. This is cinnamon lip-gloss, so I gave it to my husband. He hasn’t opened it yet.

Blog 10 06 13 426

In the bottom there were two stickers and sweet magnet. The stickers are the weird Pikachu and the DBZ reference. The magnet is awesome though. Whoever thought of Turtl-izing storm troopers in an Andy Warhol tribute is brilliant.

That’s it. That is my first Loot Crate. I love it and can’t wait for next month. They have assured everyone that next month there is a t-shirt. The next theme is ZOMBIES!
