Mr. Peabody and Sherman
Release Date: March 7, 2014
Director: Rob Minkoff
Official Trailer  International Trailer

When I was a kid there was a cartoon called “Rocky & Bullwinkle.” It was a skit type cartoon with short stories interspersed between a main story involving a cartoon squirrel and moose. There were various skits like Fractured Fairy Tales and Dudley Do-Right of the Royal Canadian Mounties. Mr. Peabody and Sherman were these time travel skits where Mr. Peabody took his boy Sherman through history. This was usually because Sherman needed help with his homework but there was always some groaner of a punch line at the end of each skit. Someone took this vingette and made it into a full length movie. At first I was skeptical of whether or not it would be good but the trailers actually look decent.

The Direct, Rob Minkoff worked on “The Lion King” and “Stuart Little.” They are both really well made movies. The movie is made by Dream Works studio and looks like it. All the characters are pretty typical looking for Dream Works.

Mr. Peabody is an award winning scientist and he adopts a boy. He’s a single Dad trying to raise a human boy all by himself. Sherman gets into trouble in school so Mr. Peabody invites the other child’s parents over. Sherman and Penny, the girl he bit at school, wind up bored and go back in time using the Way BACK machine. This of coarse causes a time right anomalie and Mr. Peabody has to fix it.

Muppets Most Wanted
Release Date: March 21, 2014
Director: James Bobin
Outraged Trailer Official Trailer

The Muppets on a world tour run afoul of a European jewel theif. There is a sever case of mistaken identity as the authorities believe Kermit is the international criminal Constantine.

When I was a kid there was a Muppet movie called the Great Muppet Caper. Miss Piggy gets accidentally involved with a European Diamond Theif in Paris. I smell a little bit of a rehash, but I really like the cast of the new movie. The plot is different enough and interesting enough that I want to see it anyway. Oh and as a bonus level you get to see Tina Fey as an Eastern European Commanding officer. Zach Galifianakis also plays… Hobo Joe. The Muppets are always awesome. Go see it if it does have a little bit a repeat issue.

Captain America: Winter Soldier
Release Date: April 4, 2014
Director: Antony and Joe Russo
Official Trailer

Captain America is having problems dealing with the modern world. He feels out of place and out of sync with the modern era. He also finds himself at odds with the missions given to him by Sheild and the Avengers. It’s time for him to take a stand for what he believes to be right. Joining up with Black Widow and enlisting the help of the Falcon, they fight against a mysterious Russian enemy called code name “The Winter Soldier.”

Captain America is an awesome franchise. I hope we get at least one more Captain America movie before they write him out. Word on the street is Chris Evans is hard to work with. Honestly, he can’t be like Val Kilmer was at the height of his Batman fame. The movie looks great in the early trailers and scenes they’ve released. I hope we get a longer, beter trailer soon though. The movie is set to release in April and I don’t remember having seen the Falcon in action yet.

What the hell happened to Vampires? Twilight isn’t the first example of a touchy feely vampire but it sure has diluted the blood pool. Lately there are a lot of movies and tv shows coming out with vampires that aren’t your Mother’s vampire.

Flutterbat_swats_Rainbow_Dash_away_S4E07

Vampire Academy is the latest to add to the pool of weak vampires. They are so normal they have to have body gaurds.

My favorite vampires are Dracula from Braham Stoker’s Dracula and Armond from “Interview With a Vampire.” Here are examples of many, strong and yet gentle vampires. They are lovers and fighters and they don’t sparkle.

This post is mostly a rant. We’ll get you a good post tomorrow.

Hey folks! Now that the holidays are over, more cool Kickstarters are starting to pop up again. Here are a few to keep an eye on.

Customizable 3D Printed Tabletop Miniatures! Made-to-order miniatures. This one has already blown by its funding goal and through a couple of stretch goals adding sci-fi  and mounts to the core of fantasy minis. They are a bit pricey, but for something that is basically print on demand, its hard to beat. Their really are no other options short of hiring a sculptor!

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians! A tactical strategy game directed by the man behind Final Fantasy Tactics. Sounds promising, but not showing us much just yet. Definitely worth keeping an eye on if you like that sort of game, though.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen! Fantasy MMO brought to you by a bunch of guys who broke away from SOE and were behind EQ, EQ2, SWG and on and on. Worth keeping an eye on if you liked any of those.

Project Nimbus! Open world mech shooter. Looks to have elements of the greats such as Zone of Enders and Virtual On. Only a few days left so go take a look!

Red Box Games Norse Warrior Miniatures! Tre Manor is one of the best miniature sculptors in the business today. Get some of his amazing work early by backing this one!

Earthdawn 4th Edition! I am a fan of Earthdawn and am VERY glad to see it coming back again. I’m not sure who is behind the new FASA, but looks like they have plenty of people convinced that they know what they are doing. Epic heroic fantasy with its own take on the genre.

The Mini Box – Simple Storage Solution! Affordable miniature storage. Glad to see an American company doing that as we don’t have many choices this side of the pond.

Last, but not least KUNG FURY! Just go watch the trailer on the Kickstarter. If that doesn’t convince you…I don’t have anything to say to you.

As always, if YOU know of a Kickstarter that everyone needs to hear about, let me know in the comments!

They suck alright...

They suck alright…

Vampire Academy
Release Date: February 14, 2014
Director:Mark Waters

Every young adult novel that is doing well right now gets a movie adaptation. YOU GET A MOVIE ADAPTATION! YOU GET A MOVIE ADAPTATION! EVERYONE GETS A MOVIE ADAPTATION! It’s like on Oprah when everyone get’s a new car. Vampire Academy is adapted from the books written by Richelle Mead. There are six books people, let’s hope this series is good.

The plot hinges on two teenagers.  Moroi princess Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir and her gaurdian Rosemarie “Rose” Hathaway. They ran away two years earlier and have now been found and brought back to the academy. Rose is set to be taught by the head of the Gaurdians, Dimitri Belikov. The head Gaurdian is 24 years old and falls for Rose while she is training. Her ward Lissa is kidnapped and they have to get her back!

The crew that made this movie are interesting. The director Mark Waters is know for Mean Girls and Spiderwick. These are decent movies. The Screenplay was adapted by Daniel Waters who is known for Heathers and Batman Returns. Either this movie is going to be darker than the silly advertising or… honestly I don’t have high hopes. The main love interest is between a 16 year old girl and a 24 year old man. It’s like they wanted to go down the Twilight rabbit hole but couldn’t have a 200 year old vampire on hand to take up the reins. The mythology of this movie uses Dhampir’s which are traditionally half vampires. Except in this they seem to have telepathic and mystical powers. Good luck with this movie. I’m not getting my hopes up. They lost me when I found out CHVRCHS is handling the end credit music with a cover of the every classic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.”

Winter’s Tale
Release Date: February 14th, 2014
Director: Akiva Goldsman

New York is magical. There is romance, mystery and magic around every corner. Set in this place a burgler and a Lady of means meet and fall in love. Death separates them but teaches the burgler that he’s not alone. He’s still loved even after her death and that he has a special purpose.

The movie is adapted from the novel of the same name by Mark Helprin. The New York City in his novel is based on historical figures and real places with a religious, spiritual and mythological flare. The main character has a mysterious white horse that keeps appearing. There is a great Bridge Builder that is trying to get back to Heaven. There are many strange occurances including a cloud wall that transports the main character, Peter Lake, through time.

See the movie. Bring tissues and see this movie. Jennifer Connelly, Will Smith, Colin Farrell, William Hurt and Russel Crowe are all amongst the stars that appear in this movie. The trailers are nothing but gold. I am sure it will be an under appreciated but amazingly beautiful movie.

Dream Come True?!

Dream Come True?!

Only Lovers Left Alive
Release: April 11, 2014
Director: Jim Jarmusch

Did you see Thor: The Dark World? Tom Hiddleston was amazing right? Well check this out.

Two vampires, Adam and Eve, reunite after Eve senses Adam’s suicidal depression. He wants to end it all and his human friend Ian, obtains a wooden bullet for Adam to end it all. Eve comes all the way from Tangier to Detroit to see her lover. After days of reconnecting, Ava, Eve’s younger and wilder sister, shows up to cause trouble. They start running and wind up back in Tangier.

This cast is like a dream. Tom Hiddleston plays the dark and brooding Adam. Tilda Swanson, who I have a huge crush on, plays Eve. Mia Wasikowska plays Ava. The always endearing John Hurt plays Marlowe. Anyon Yelchin plays Ian. Jeffrey Wright plays Dr. Watson. Look at that cast! Loki, The Snow Queen, Alice, Professor Bruttenholm, Chekov and Beett walk into a bar… It’s a fantastic cast. The Director is super quirky too. He’s directed, Ghost Dog; Coffee and Cigarrettes and Deadman with Johnny Depp. The movie is slow and has lots of scene that just set the overall tone for the movie, even if they don’t really affect the plot. It reminds me of Blood and Donuts.

The movie has been playing film festivals since 2013 and is finally getting a limited release to mainstream theaters in April.

Her (2013)
Release date: Now!
Directed by Spike Jonez

Her-movie-poster-horiz-review-980x500

Theodore Twombly makes a living as a writer, of sorts. He writes emotionally touching letters for other people. At the end of a relationship he finds himself heartbroken and purchases a new operating system for his phone. The interface actually grows and changes with his needs and reacts to the owner.

In other words, Joaquin Phoenix plays a man in love with his operating system. At first, I thought that maybe the movie was going to be one giant Apple Odyssey commercials. ( Hey it’s my I-Movie!) After researching the movie and watching more trailers, Her actually looks fascinating. The trailers make it look very touching… I keep waiting for something horrible to happen though. The last movie I watched with a self-aware operating system was 2001: A Space Odyssey.  That movie didn’t end very well. The director is amazing. Spike Jonez  was the brain behind “Where the Wild Things Are” and the writer behind Jackass. He has a great sense of timing and story. I think the movie is his way of reaching out and talking about our growing dependancy on technology. Everyone is a little scared we are going to fall in love with our computers and stop falling in love with each other. Well, we have more people on Earth now than we know what to do with. If we fall in love with our computers a little bit, it might not be a bad thing. Also, the movie has a way of consoling us, reminding us to find solace with each other. Every experience is important, even not traditional ones.

I plan on seeing this movie later this month. I will let you know what I think.

The Lego Movie
Release Date: February 7
Director: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller

the-lego-movie-poster-full-photo

Emmet, an Every Man,  has been accidentally identified as the hero who will save the world. He’s brought in to a secret society that has banded together to over throw an evil tyrant.

The voice of Emmet is performed by Chris Pratt and the President is Will Farrell. A ton of celebrities have banded together to do voices. They have Morgan Freeman, Channing Tatum, Elizabeth Banks and Liam Neeson all doing voices for characters in the movie. The animation looks hilarious. I really just want to see it because all the sets in the movie are made from actual, existing Lego parts. This movie has models and figures that are coming out at the same time. It will be a big tie in with merchandise but I hope the movie will be worth watching. There is more to say about the Lego sets coming out to support the movie than things to say about the movie. It’s pretty much just a fun kids movie they are using to sell toys. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad. I am sure it’s going to be great with good gags and likeable characters.

Noah
Release date: March 28th
Director: Darren Aronofsky

NoahMoviePoster

A modern retelling of the Noah flood story.

What a crap fest… The movie is flooded with famous faces. Noah is played by Russel Crowe. Naameh is played by Jennifer Connelly. Noah’s daughter in law is played by Emma Watson. Methuselah is played by Anthony Hopkins. All these famous actors and actress can not save this movie the way the Ark saved life on the planet. Nothing can keep this thing afloat. From the trailer, all I see is over acting with way to many special effects. It’s like Mel Gibson’s The Passion of Christ. There were lots of familiar faces but over all it wasn’t very good and neither the story or the actors could save it. Believe it or not, 98% of people on Rotten Tomatoes want to see this movie. Well here’s a spoiler, Noah lives and his family makes it through the flood. Sorry, I read the book. The director actually has a really good resume, he is responsible for Pi, Black Swan, The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream. I’m not Christian but I actually love the Noah story. The story is much older than the “written” Bible and traces back to Mesopotamia and Babylon.  I really hope the movie isn’t as bad as the trailers make it look. Will I go see it… probably not. I am going to wait till it comes out on NetFlixx.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. May the wind be always at your back. May you always have games to play. May the sun always shine when you need light. May find what you need when you need it.

Ooo… do you need a movie?

Here are some movies that take place on New Years Eve.

The Bizarre….

1. Strange Days –  A science fiction romp set in the near future of… 1999. Ralph Finnes, Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis find themselves at the center of a conspiracy. Squids are an illegal item used to record and replay memories. Jeriko One is killed and the only living witness was wearing a Squid. Lenny and Lornette need to get the tape into the right hands without getting killed while infiltrating a New Years Eve party. I love this movie.

strange-days-movie-31473-hd-wallpapers

The Funny….

2. Ghost Busters 2 – Will the world end? Will Vigo the Carpathian come back to life? Will the river of MOOD slime take over New York? Honestly, I don’t think the mood slime would really bother New Yorkers. We’ve put up with some crappy times in the past few years. I enjoy Ghost Busters and this one isn’t as good as the first, but it’s got some excellent moments.

Ghostbusters_ii_poster

The Nostolgic…

3. Radio Days – Woody Allen waxes romantic about the days when Seth Green was young enough to play Woody Allen as a child. No really, he talks about growing up around the warm glow of the radio and the voices that come out. He talks about the lives behind the scenes and the lives of the people that listened. Set in 1940’s New York, it’s a very funny and romantic look the city. It ends on New Years Eve.

RadioDays

If you want a movie that is a party but not about New Years Eve… Purple Rain or Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Enjoy 2014. Should be an interesting year.

Open Grave
Release Date: January 3, 2014

Open Grave (2013)

A man wakes up in a pit full of bodies and doesn’t remember anything about why or how he got there. Locating a group of others in the same situation, they try to figure out what happened, what’s going to happen and who they all are. Surrounded by wilderness, they find other survivors that are either crazy or violent. The stress of the situation causes suspicion and threatens to tear the group apart from the inside out.

Open Grave is made by the same director responsible for the barely passable, Apollo 18. Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego doesn’t seem to be repeating his shlocky film making with this stark horror film. Watching the trailer though made me compare it to a mix of 28 Days Later and Cabin in the Woods. The premise of amnesia is also being used way to often lately. As a writer, it’s said amnesia is used by a writer who is unsure of where to go with his/her’s story. Hopefully this isn’t true of Open Grave because it actually looks amazing. The main character is played by Sharlto Copley, famous for District 9. Another main character is played by Joseph Morgan from the Vampire Diaries TV series.

The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box
Release Date: January 10, 2014

Lena Headey, Michael Sheen and Aneurin Barnard in The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box (2014)

Mariah Mundi has to save his younger brother, whose been kidnapped after his parents disappear. He stumbles on a dangerous mystery and has to get a job at the oppulent Prince Regent Hotel in order to get close to the only one he knows may have information on their disappearance. In the process he finds a hidden realm, magical artifacts and dark secrets.

There is always the one movie no one’s heard about. I have not seen any advertising about this movie. It says it’s getting a limited release in January but it looks worth it to find a theater showing this movie. The movie is set during victorian England but has a distinctly Steam Punk feel to the world. As is often the case, the movie is based off the novel The Curse of the Midas Box by G.P. Taylor. They seem to be marketing the movie to the young adult crowd between the ages of 12-16 but I think they should try going for an older audience and maybe a nerdier one. Sam Neil seems to be the antagonist of the film and looks fantastic by the way. Check it out!

RoboCop
Release Date: February 12, 2014

2028 Detroit has a crime problem. Omnicorp has a solution. Over seas they have deployed robots for policing lawless areas. They are programed to recognize a threat verses an innocent. There is one problem implementing this in the US, people here don’t want a robot policing their streets. Omnicorp decides they need something better, a robot mixed with a man. That way there is a human face and people will know, this Robocop once felt just like them.

I am excited and skeptical of the new Robocop. The 1987 version is beloved by fans because it was a well crafted movie, a little cheesy at times but overall well made. They’ve updated the story to leave out the 1980’s war on cocain smugglers but it’s essentially the same story. Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton are all principle actors in the new Robocop, which gives me hope. All three actors have had some real stinkers but not in recent years. The biggest issue most people I know have had is with the new Robocop suit. It’s flat black and looks weird. I think people wanted the chrome plated version to remind them of cars from the 80’s and 90’s. 85-87_Ford_Escort_hatchRobocop1987

When the new costume was leaked, people thought that maybe it was all black because they were going to CG a better costume. Turns out, that wasn’t the plan.

Eitherway, Kane and I are going to see the new Robocop. I don’t know if we will see it opening weekend… but we really want to see exactly how they adapted the movie.

47 Ronin
Release Date December 25, 2013

47Ronin2012Poster

Plot: 47 Ronin, which are leaderless samurai, set out to find a man they once betrayed. Kai, a half breed who winds up as a slave, is needed in their mission. Seeking revenge for the death of their leader, they will band together with Kai to bring down supernatural forces transforming him into a legendary hero.

Thoughts: This movie is  high on my list of movies to see in December, alongside The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  For one thing, it’s a crazy dream version of a real event. 47 Ronin is based on real events in Japan. Their leader offended the Shogun by attacking one of his officials in the Edo Palace. The attack was only after being constantly provoked and insulted according to historical accounts. He was ordered to commit ritual suicide. His men were no considered Ronin because his clan as ordered to disburse. Ronin is simply a term for leaderless men. They conspired together and killed the official that brought the disgrace of their leader. They cut off his head and after bathing and preparing it, laid the head and a letter explaining their actions at the grave of their leader. They were captured and imprisoned by the Shogun for their crimes. In an act of clemency, the Emperor upheld their right to vengeance according to Bushido and let them commit suicide.  This was honorable because otherwise they would have been publicly executed as common murderers.  They still celebrate this act as a festival every year on December 14 the at Sengakuji Temple. (Wiki)

Keanu Reeves plays Kai, the half breed they find to help lead them. I don’t expect this to be a “woah-fest” type movie. Everything I’ve seen so far about this movie makes me think it will be incredible. It’s a fantastical retelling of a legendary story. From the trailers, it looks like he is channeling the same performance he gave in Constantine, which I approve. The movie is also full of Japanese actors you didn’t know you knew so well. Attached to the movie is Rinko Kikuchi. She was mostly recently in Pacific Rim as Mako Mori but she’s a seasoned actress in both the US and Japan. Her performance in Pacific Rim was amazing.  Hiroyuki Sanada is considered one of the most prominent actors in the movie. He’s big news on both sides of the world. He was in the Last Samurai; Lost; Speed Racer; The Ring and Ring 2. Tadanobu Asano plays Lord Kira. You may know him from playing Hogun in the Thor movies or from Ichi the Killer. I’m also looking forward to seeing him the Lupin the 3rd movie. The entire cast comprised of major actors. The only thing that makes me nervous is that the director has NOTHING to his name. Carl Rinsch is the director and I am sure he’s worked on plenty with no credit. That’s how Hollywood works these days but he’s never directed anything full length. Once upon a time, all directors were unknown though.

47 Ronin is still worth seeing.

I, Frankenstein
Release Date January 24, 2014

I_Frankenstein_Poster

Plot: Adam, Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, finds himself the only defense the human race has against the armies of the dark. He is caught in the middle of a battle between fallen angels and gargoyles for domination of the earth.

Thoughts: What a crap fest! No matter how many trailers I’ve seen for this, I am constantly disappointed. The movie has a fantastic cast including Bill Nighy (Shawn of the Dead, Pirates of the Carribean); Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings) and finally… Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight; Thank You for Smoking). The script was written by Kevin Grevioux based off his graphic novel. Oh yeah, and he acts in the movie. If you don’t know Kevin Grevioux, he is notable for co-writing the crap fest Underworld.

Not going to see this one… maybe when it hits Netflix so I can write a review. There is simply not enough alcohol to drink until it’s good. Their website is sad and poorly made so I am not linking to it.

Divergent
Release Date March 21, 2014

DivergentPoster

Plot: Beatrice Prior has turned 16. This is the time where she will learn what her path in life will be. In a future Chicago, society is divided into five factions. After her test she finds out she’s divergent and the test didn’t work. They tell her not to let anyone know because they will have her killed.

Thoughts: This was another young adult science fiction novel optioned by Hollywood to feed off the Twilight/Hunger Games fans. I’m not saying I’m opposed to more movies based off well written fiction. The trailers look interesting but they really are feeding off the Hunger Games fans. The movie has the same aesthetic look and feel. The book is the first novel by Veronica Roth and it’s a trilogy. Potentially, if this does well we can get two to four movies out of this. Kate Winslet is in this movie… that means it’s going to be good right? The main character is played by Shailene Woodley. You know her mostly from TV like the O.C. and Crossing Jordan. I checked some fan reactions and the community is eagerly awaiting the movie on screen.

I’m planning to go see this movie. I am curious enough to want tickets after seeing the trailers. It reminds me of so many science fiction movies like Equilibrium.

The-Hunger-Games_-Catching-Fire-28

Catching Fire is one of the most amazing movies I’ve ever seen. The story, acting and special effects were outstanding, uplifting and mind blowing. Don’t go any further if you don’t want spoilers.

the-hunger-games-catching-fire-international-trailer-header

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire finds our hero Katniss Everdean back home in district 12. There are a lot of things going through Katniss’ head now and she needs to sort them out. Being home is unbelievable and even though Katniss and Peeta should feel safe, they aren’t at ease. Things are changing and President Snow is putting pressure on our Champions to put on a good show on the Victory Tour. Traveling through the districts, Katniss has been threatened by President Snow, that if people aren’t at ease and aren’t believing that her and Peeta are madly in love their will be consequences. Meanwhile, the districts are unsettled and whispers of rebellion start to travel far and wide. To solve the issue the 75th Hunger Games, Quarter Quell will draw tributes from the existing pool of victors. There will be one male and one female victor from each district. This puts our heroes back in danger. Haymitch Abernathy is chosen as male tribute but Peeta volunteers. Once back at the Capitol, our heroes find out the other tributes are just as pissed off about this decision. Teams start to form to try and keep districts 1 and 2 from dominating the field. Everything is complicate though and allies are lost in battle before Katniss finds the bravery to really stand against The Hunger Games as a symbol and as a leader.

They did a really amazing job bringing this movie to life. The first movie is good but doesn’t go deep enough into the characters to come out with any meaning. Catching Fire on the other hand expands the universe, introduces new characters that won the games previous and fills you in on each characters motivations. Even the supporting roles get more time, like Haymitch, Primrose, Gale and Peeta. The story is so full and lush that 2.5 hours goes by in a blink of an eye. The character dialogue in the movie is used much more artfully than in the first movie. Everything is their for a purpose and helps craft what is really going on in the world around Katniss.

I also loved the fashion. You get to see more of the wacky clothing that all the different districts and the Capitol wear. The costume designer should get an award because of all the beautiful sweaters and knit wear they incorporated. Here are some amazing examples:

The-Hunger-Games-Catching-Fire-Victory-Tour

Hollywood finally did something right. First, they cast Jennifer Lawrence as the main character. Jennifer Lawrence looks like a real person with curves. It’s amazing to see an actress on screen that isn’t starving herself for the role. Secondly, everyone else gives the best performance ever, especially Donald Sutherland as President Snow. Thirdly, it’s great to see a female role with such integrity, bravery, wit and complexity as Katniss Everdean. They didn’t dumb her down for the screen. THANK YOU! It’s also fantastic to have a lead character that’s not chasing around a boy because she wants to get in his pants or become a vampire. The male characters are all so diverse and fully developed around her it makes this movie very special. This is a rare gem.

Furthermore, they are making the last book into two movies. I am tortured because I have to wait a year for part 1 but… I may just read the books to keep myself happy. I didn’t want to ruin the movies by reading the books. Some how, I don’t think that will be an issue.

The-Hunger-Games-Catching-Fire-after-credits-large

Happy Hunger Games and may the odds, ever be in your favor.

I am going to see this movie again this week. That’s how AWESOME it is.

The-Hunger-Games_-Catching-Fire-28

I was a pretty big fan of the first Hunger Games movie. I had a few minor issues with it. I wanted more background on the setting. Why did everyone just accept that this was their fate? Why was their no fighting back? Why was this even happening? What we were told in the first movie is that their was a rebellion and after it was quashed, they started having what amounted to child sacrifice to the Capital government. At the time, I wanted more depth for the setting because it WAS well done. The characters were well done and carried the action well.

So, where does this one fit into the formula? First, the games are not just children this time, making things far FAR less horrific. The politics are delved into MUCH more deeply. The characters still carry the action well, but it is less of a focus this time around. This time, it is all about team building.

The-Hunger-Games-Catching-Fire-after-credits-large

Everyone around Katniss begins to realize that she is becoming more and more of a symbol of freedom and defiance. Each in turn starts to find a place at her side supporting the coming uprising. Some characters, such as Effie, who are not necessarily likeable the first time start to realize just how rotten things have become and slowly shift their allegiances.

The plot takes some pretty swift turns. Things never lag and the whole movie flows at a great pace that is never too slow or too fast. Surprises come often enough to keep you intrigued without feeling out of place or just there for shock value.

All in all, highly recommend the movie. Even if you were not necessarily a fan of the first, I would recommend this one as a great near-future sci-fi film. The horrors of the first movie are much less prominent this time around. The aftermath of what happened in the first is still highly emotional, but they don’t dwell on the awful things that happened. This is about the people coming together and realizing that things don’t have to be like this. I can’t wait for the next of the series, which I understand is broken into two parts. Should be a heck of a ride!
