Breaking Down 2015

Some amazing movies and games came out this year. If you haven’t played Fallout 4 yet, or Santa thought you ordered Fallout 3, you are missing out. You need to save up the $60.00 and go get it. It’s $49.99 on the Steam Sale right now. They’ve made major changes that allow you to build settlements and craft items easier. You have a home base but it can be customized. It’s also work the investment to buy the guide, which was only $18.00 when I bought it two days ago. Animal Crossing also came out with a spin off game called Happy Home. It’s fun if you like grindy games with no end. I’ll write more about these two later. Rock Band 4 came out. We’re finally getting to play it tonight… hehe.

LEGO! How could you lose the TMNT license to Megablocks? Seriously, why did your stuff have to suck so much for that franchise when everything else was amazing. ( Side note: the Back to the Future car… also terrible.) Lego did a great job this year on their Friends, Elves, Disney, City and Star Wars lines but kind of dropped the ball on a few other licenses they were holding. The Jurassic Park sets were amazing but they had a hard time keeping up with demand. This left a lot of collectors flapping in the wind. The architecture line has been amazing the past few years but this year they didn’t do their big box of all white blocks. Color me disappointed. This is a Christmas time set that they release only in Lego stores. It wasn’t release this year but they did a smaller box. I have to give Megablocks their dues though. They came out with some really great looking historical military sets and Call of Duty brand Zombie sets.

Tanto Cuore, I love you. I will never leave you… EVER. I can’t wait for OktoberFest to come out. I had the good fortune to volunteer with Japanime Games this summer. It was amazing and I can’t wait for the conventions to start up again this year. Luckily they had demo sets to show people for Pre-Orders and Previewing. The game introduces a new mechanic, beer cards, which affect your ability to play certain cards. It’s going to be a lot of fun. If you want a GOOD FUN card game for 4-5 people, keep an eye out for it. They should be shipping them out in the new year. Also, they have an associated company called Kamikaze games. They produce Barbarosa, which is an irreverant, sexy, World War 2 card game. You really have to be a good sport to play this because they base it off real battles, so… you sort of play as an invading Nazi army, featuring chibi sexy Hitler. It’s a great game though. There is a version of the game that has historical photos instead of the Ladies if that makes you feel more comfortable. ( I like the Anime version.) They also have several other new games coming out. One is called Gods Gambit, which they let me try out when I was at Kumoricon! I’m looking forward to Gods Gambit so much. It’s an Uno Style game. It will be a great fast game you can play with your buddies at a party. The art is really interesting too. I have some photos, I’ll dig out later and write about it in depth.

Cell phone games… well… If you didn’t play Alpha Bears, go work on that right now. They have made so many improvements to the game. They added a VS mode. They added a better system of replenishing coins. They’ve added seasonal, special event content. Kudos to Alphabear for listening to their users. It’s amazing. They are also developing a new game for Android in 2016.

Movies were really great this year. Do I even have to mention Star Wars? Holy Carps. Holy, holy Carps.

Crimson Peak, Mocking Jay part 2, The Martian, Jurassic World were all pretty incredible movies. I hope Hollywood keeps up the momentum because so far all I want to see in 2016 is Civil War and Dead Pool. Hopefully, it will rev up quickly and not be an off year for movies.

That’s all for now. 2015 was a great year and 2016 is going to be even better. Happy New year!

First, I’m not obsessed with Tom Hiddleston (Avengers, Only Lovers Left Alive), he just makes really good movies. It’s not my fault. Think about it.

Secondly, yes, I do see everything made by  Guillermo del Toro (Hell Boy, Pacific Rim), because he makes really incredible movies.  (Although, I haven’t made it through Pan’s Labyrinth yet. That movie is heart wrenching.)

Crimson Peak is the newest movie by Guillermo del Toro, staring Mia Wasikowska (Only Lovers Left Alive, Alice in Wonderland). It’s a reunion between her and Tom Hiddleston. This movie is a throw back to gothic romance novels.

Edith Cushing (Wasikowska), is an aspiring author who meets a dark stranger, Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston). Edith falls in love with Sir Thomas and weds him only to be swept away to his home in Cumbria. Since Edith’s parents are passed away, her only connection to the outside world is her best friend, Dr. Alan McMichael (Charlie Hunnam). The house is in the middle of no where and is crumbling. Sir Thomas and his sister, Lady Lucile Sharpe (Jessica Chastain), are trying to hid the secrets of the old house. Who can Edith trust when she can’t escape the ghosts of the past?

I haven’t been so excited to see a movie since Only Lovers Left Alive or Brahm Stoker’s Dracula! I am a big fan of gothic romance novels. I’ve read all the classics like Moura by Virginia Coffman. I have a huge library of Dorothy Daniels, Virginia Coffman and Victoria Holt books. Maybe some day they will make a Moura movie. EEE! (Insert high pitched noises of excitement.) That would be dreamy. Until then, my Mother and I are planning to go to Crimson Peak together. We’re going to have some Mother/Daughter bonding over dreamy dark haired men. That is the formula you know? Wait you don’t?

Gothic Romances all have similar elements.

  • Dark haired, mysterious man. They can be ambiguously antagonist or protagonist or a switch.(Check)
  • An innocent but seemingly frail female protagonist making it through the world on her own. (Check)
  • Stern, tight lipped female antagonist, that is part of the family/manor/staff . (Check)
  • Supernatural element, either real or imagined or both. (Check)
  • Lonely isolated house. (Check)
  • A dark secret. (Check)
  • Long, nefarious family history. (Check)
  • A friend, attorney or other male love interest to help out, usually ineffectively. (Check)
  • The moment of realization, when the Strong Female Protagonist suddenly emerges after going through a harrowing series of culminating events. (Check)

All of the elements are there. One of the most popular and famous of the gothics is Jane Eyre. I adore that one. If you haven’t seen or read any gothic novels, I suggest Jane Eyre. I am a big fan of the movie version with Orson Wells. He is dreamy as the dark haired, mysterious man. Joan Fontaine plays Jane. She’s also famous for being in another well known gothic, Rebecca written by Daphne du Maurier, movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Joan Fontaine is incredible, strong and resourceful in Jane Erye. The movie/book are about an orphan hired to take care of Edward Rochester’s daughter. Watch it, love it, go by Moura by Virginia Coffman. Same plot except during the Napoleonic era.

Anyway, Crimson Peak is expected to be atmospheric and terrifying. Stephan King saw an early release and was quoted as saying, “Gorgeous and just f–king terrifying.” If that wasn’t an amazing endorsement, I don’t know what would be.

Today is the first day of Fall. Time to start planning your Halloween Horror movies. I want to give you a few rare gems to get you in the mood.

On my bands first album we have a song called Dust Devil. The song is named after the movie Dust Devil. (If you are in Seattle come out to the Sea Monster Lounge at 7pm. Free Show! We are playing Dust Devil.) This horror movie was written and directed by Richard Stanley, the brilliant mind behind the videos for Fields of the Nephilim. If you haven’t seen it, take the time to find a copy.

He’s not just a serial killer, he’s much worse doesn’t even begin describe it. Wendy Robinson is being pursued by the Dust Devil because she no longer wants the spark of life she’s been given. The demon has sensed her willingness to cross over but she changes her mind. The winds of the desert stoke the fires as Wendy fights for her soul and the Dust Devil fights for his immortality.

Dust Devil is a cult classic worthy of hunting down.

Dream Come True?!

Dream Come True?!

Did you see Thor: The Dark World? Tom Hiddleston was amazing right? Well check this out.

Two vampires, Adam and Eve, reunite after Eve senses Adam’s suicidal depression. He wants to end it all and his human friend Ian, obtains a wooden bullet for Adam to end it all. Eve comes all the way from Tangier to Detroit to see her lover. After days of reconnecting, Ava, Eve’s younger and wilder sister, shows up to cause trouble. They start running and wind up back in Tangier.

This cast is like a dream. Tom Hiddleston plays the dark and brooding Adam. Tilda Swanson, who I have a huge crush on, plays Eve. Mia Wasikowska plays Ava. The always endearing John Hurt plays Marlowe. Anyon Yelchin plays Ian. Jeffrey Wright plays Dr. Watson. Look at that cast! Loki, The Snow Queen, Alice, Professor Bruttenholm, Chekov and Beett walk into a bar… It’s a fantastic cast. The Director is super quirky too. He’s directed, Ghost Dog; Coffee and Cigarrettes and Deadman with Johnny Depp. The movie is slow and has lots of scene that just set the overall tone for the movie, even if they don’t really affect the plot. It reminds me of Blood and Donuts.

Growing up I had the odd experience of being the one of the only kids in my school, whose parents were still together. When you are surrounded by the societal norm for your community, you start wondering when you’ll conform. I remember asking them very casually when they would be getting a divorce. Luckily it never happened.

Hollywood has created some interesting movies that touch on divorce. They aren’t supposed to be conversation pieces about relationships but they could be. They aren’t the most cliché divorce movies you’ve heard of like, War of the Roses or Kramer vs Kramer. A lot of the movies I’ve watched that talk about divorce in a more realistic, less dramatic fashion are outlandish comedies. Starting with spies and we end with crimes! Enjoy.

5. True Lies

Summary: Harry Tasker is a secret agent. His wife has no idea. Helen Tasker is bored with her life because she is growing apart from her husband. Using his  friends at the agency, he concocts a plan to make her life more interesting and reconnect. The plan goes horribly wrong when Harry is interrupted by actual counter-espionage, revealing his real occupation.

How this movie touches on divorce: Harry Tasker doesn’t realize how boring life seems to his wife. She looks for an outlet and starts to consider cheating. The movie is really discussing how important it is to do things outside the daily routine, together. Their solution is to make her an international spy! That way they can share their unusual day-to-day work.

In real life they suggest going out to eat at a new restaurant or taking a dance class. In the real world, you wouldn’t become a spy just by getting kidnapped by a terrorist organization that has Tia Carrere as their evil leader.

4. Mr. and Ms. Smith

Summary – John and Jane Smith are married but they are growing apart. In reality they are spies working for rival agencies. Neither is aware till they are given the assignment to eliminate each other.

How this movie talks about divorce: This marriage was never based on the truth. In the very beginning of the relationship these two spies lied about everything. In fact, I’m not sure how they could legally be married because … well never mind. They start suspecting that the other is cheating and start working on  getting a divorce. This movie is really talking about how you can’t have a stable marriage if you kill people for a living… I mean if you lie to your loved ones. They realize after they have to band together to get out alive that they need to tell each other the truth.

Eventually they work it out, even in the midst of a fire fight.

3.  Moonrise Kingdom

Summary – Two young lovers flee together to get married. The town Sheriff and the Girls family band together, putting their problems aside to find the two kids before a hurricane hits the island.

What does this have to do with divorce? Suzy’s parents have a very distant relationship. Both parents have their issues. Suzy’s Mother has been cheating with the town Sheriff. Suzy’s Father, pretty knows that his marriage is a failure. Suzy, decides to run away with her secret love so that she doesn’t wind up like her Mother in a sham marriage. That’s when the adults realize that, while they care about each other, they are hurting themselves by behaving badly. Sam, is a troubled orphan that goes to the island every year with a scouting troop. Well, his foster parents don’t want him back this time. Suzy’s parents don’t divorce them but the sheriff adopts him, realizing that the kid just needs the right influence in his life. All of Wes Anderson’s movies deal with dysfunctional families. This one has a happy ending because once everyone realized how their happiness was tied to each other, they got the help they needed.

2. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Summary – Steve Zissou is a naturalist, exploring the underwater realms in his yellow submarine. This is his escape from the surface world where he has to deal with the death of a dear friend, the fall out from his divorce and the sudden appearance of an illegitimate child.

Divorce is the basis for most of the character relationships in this movie. The main character Steve Zissou has an ex-wife Eleanor who controls part of his world. She’s still deeply involved in his life even though they are no longer married. This deals with the aftermath of divorce and how different people cope. Although the marriage bond has been severed, you are most likely still going to deal with that person. Why not try to become friends or at least civil? Sometimes, your ex may even know you better than you know yourself. Even through Eleanor has issues with her ex, she still wants to support him in his goal… to an extent.

1. The Ref

Summary – Talk about a bad night. Gus, a professional cat burglar, breaks into the wrong house on Christmas Eve. His partner abandons him and he has to take a family hostage.  The family fights even while tied up and being robbed blind. The burglar finds himself playing marriage  and family counselor instead of getting his job done. It helps that Dennis Leary is the unfortunate burglar.

How does this talk about divorce? They couple in the movie is at each other’s throat. The rest of the family isn’t much help. The son is a blackmailer. The husband is considered a weakling by his overbearing wife. Everyone has their own issues caused by the image they want to project. They are stuck in a suburban life, miserable and can’t even tell each other why they are unhappy. The situation helps them work through their issues by forcing them to actually de
al with each other. I am sure though, if we saw a sequel, there was divorce over the horizon.

All of these movies bring up divorce in their own bizarre ways.

Runners up: Death Becomes Her and She Devil. Both movies involve Meryl Streep. In both movies Meryl Streep steals another woman’s man and both movies have novelists. They also both have a supernatural twist after divorce and getting revenge on the other woman and ex husband. This is why I didn’t add them to the list. I don’t want to shame any party in a relationship. Both movies are bizarre in their own way. Death Becomes Her involves a treatment that makes you younger, more beautiful and… immortal. She Devil involves a deal with the devil that gives Roseanne Barr’s character the ability to summon everything she needs to get revenge.

Years ago, around 12 years, I had a website called the Bathroom of Darkness. I mostly wrote movie reviews for old movies. At the time I was working part-time for a video store. Through all the years I’ve noticed some really weird things about movies. I’d like to resurrect my movie reviews and movie lists.

I had lists. They were my Sei Shonagon moment. The lists were compilations of my observations like, the worst super hero movies ( any Fantastic 4), top favorite holiday lists ( Hebrew Hammer) and other things that were wacky (Frogs is really about reptiles?!). I had a list I posted every year about movies where the turkey was a character. I don’t mean a live animal either. I’m talking about a dead, cooked turkey.

There are a lot of movies out there that do weird things. Did you ever see Mr. and Mrs. Smith? It was a movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. They played a husband and wife that  didn’t know they worked for rival spy agencies. Sounds like an awesome action movie right? It was really a conversation about how the lack of communication is the major contributing factor to divorce. I’ll get into that more later.

Demolition Man is a pretty great science fiction action movie with Sylvester Stallone. The main character has a hard time asking people for help and always thinks he’s right. The movie is really about learning to ask for help and learning to trust the people around him.

Now, those are just two examples. I’ve also discussed subliminal zombies also known as horror movies incorrectly marked. Love it. This is what I think about as a writer. It would be easy to write about all the horrible things in the Star Wars prequel movies, but I’d rather tell you about Father Goose, with Leslie Carone.

Talk to you soon!

Mocking Jay: Part 1
Release Date: Nov. 21, 2014
Director: Francis Lawrence
Official Trailer

The next Hunger Games installment comes out next month, much to excitement of fans everywhere! The last movie had a cliff hanger ending and we don’t know what happened to Johanna Mason or Peeta Mellark! ::Bites finger nails:: Although, if you have watched any of the trailers, you know they are alive. That’s all you get to know.

The next movie has Donald Sutherland back as the creepy President Snow. He’s back up to his old tricks by trying to drive public opinion in his favor while rumors of the Mocking Jay rebellion swirl around. Katniss finds herself in the hands of the rebellion lead by survivors of District 13. No one knew there was another district out there, some where.

Will Katniss be able to draw from deep within and lead the rebellion? Will she still be able to fight? I can’t wait to see what happens.

This movie looks fantastic. Julianne Moore is spooky as President Alma Coin. Take some time to look through the promotional portraits floating around out there and to watch the various trailers that have been released. We are in for a roller coaster as we find out if our heros can survive in a teenaged wasteland.

Maze Runner
Release Date: Sept. 19th, 2014
Director: Wes Ball
Official Trailer

Thomas can’t remember anything but his name. Waking up to find himself trapped in a maze with a group of other young men, he has to figure out what is going on. Just as he’s adjusting to his world, a girl arrives named Teresa. There has never been a girl there before. Thomas becomes a maze runner mapping and looking for a way out as they try to survive.

There are some crazy mythological stories from Greece and one of them is the story of Theseus and another the story of Icarus and Daedalus.  Once upon a time, a crazy king had a minotaur. So he built a maze and put the minotaur in the middle. Then he fed the minotaur anyone that displeased him. Then they went to war with other city states and demanded that 7 young men and 7 of the best unwed young girls be sent every year to the feast of the minotaur. They were then sent into the maze and the minotaur would hunt them and kill them. This happened every year till Thesueus hunted and slayed the minotaur through wise trickery. That my friends, is the inspirational back ground for this type of story.

Kill the minotaur! Escape the MAZE!

In other news, the movie is based on a book. The book is supposedly fantastic. I haven’t myself read it but so many people have enjoyed it they sent the book to the FEAST OF SCREEN ADAPTATIONS! It happened to win. Thomas Brodie-Sangster is in the movie. You may known him as the voice of Ferb on Phinneas and Ferb. Chris Sheffield plays Ben and he was on Happy Land. Finally Dylan O’Brien plays the main character Thomas. You may have seen him on the TV show, Teen Wolf.

I think I am going to wait for NetFlix though I encourage everyone else to see this in the theater. There are some great young actors and actresses in this movie that we will see more of in the future.

Young Ones
Release Date: Oct. 17, 2014 ( Limited US release)
Director: Jack Paltrow
Official Trailer

Water, it’s the most precious substance known to man. Imagine growing up in a world where your father tells you stories about green pastures. That is this world. Wouldn’t you do anything possible to protect your family in a world where dust is more abundant than rain or good morals? Join a young man and his equally young companions trying to survive in a near future filled with famine.

I love, love, love genre mash ups. This is not just post apocalyptic, it’s not just young adult, but it’s also a sci-fi western. Yes, you read that correctly. Just like Cowboys and Aliens, this is a sci-fi western. It’s also getting a limited US release. Right now the movie is just finishing up the film festival circuts, which is why you probably haven’t heard or seen anything about it. The director, Jack Paltrow, also wrote the movie. ( Yes, that’s Gwen’s brother.) The movie stars Elle Fanning (Super 8, Maleficent), Nicholas Hoult (Skins), Kodi Smit-McPhee (ParaNorman) and Michael Shannon ( Boardwalk Empire).

You should be outraged if you are not getting this movie in your city. Some films deserve to be seen. Ask your local theater for a showing… demand it. THROW THINGS… wait, don’t do that. Keep suggesting it till a wide release is scheduled.

The Boxtrolls
Release Date: Sept. 26, 2014
Directors: Graham Annable, Anthony Stacchi
Official Trailer

Eggs, a human boy, has been raised by the boxtrolls. The subterranian dwellers live in the sewers and only venture above ground at night. That’s when they forage for supplies. An exterminator is seeking to stop the nusience from bothering the residents of the town above. Eggs has to find a way to save his friends and learn what it means to be human in the process.

The Boxtrolls looks enchanting. The directors have been in the animation departments for several beloved movies (Paranorman) and in the visual effects department (Hook) as well. One of the writters I adore, Adam Pava. He worked on the glorious Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. The voice actors are very notable including Ben Kingsley, Nick Frost and Tracy Morgan. The animation studio worked on both Paranorman and Coraline. The clay animation is very inspired by Tim Burton. The artistic design is dark, yet colorful.

I can’t wait to watch Eggs dance his way into our hearts and minds.

Book of Life
Release Date: Oct. 17, 2017
Director:Jorge R. Gutierrez
Official Trailer

Manolo has been the victim of the bet between two otherworldly beings. Finding himself in the land of the dead he travels through three worlds to figure out his path and which world he truely belongs.

Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge Gutierre, they bring to the screen a story with roots in Latin American stories. They worked together to bring a story to life that contains the mythology of the South America, in a Corpse Bride style movie. The main story line is a romance, Manolo is trying to get back to Maria, who he loves. Even death can’t stop him from trying to get back to the land of the living.

Everything I’ve seen of the movie so far makes me excited. The Corpse Bride was good but was missing something. I really feel that the missing element has been finally found.

Hero 6
Release Date: Nov. 7, 200
Directors:  Don Hall, Chris Williams
Official Trailer

Hiro Hamada is a genius when it comes to robots. When a Kabuki masked villian appears, he teams up with a robot and some friends to defeat his army of nano bots.

Disney… sometimes you make the best films. We saw the trailer for this when we went to see Gaurdians of the Galaxy. It stuck with me so long, I can’t wait for it to come out. I hope it’s as good as the trailers make it seem. The two directors are responsible for some really fantastic movies. Don Hall worked on the Frog Princess and The Emperor’s New Groove. Chris Williams worked on The Emperor’s New Grove as well and Mulan. You can see the influence on the movie once you know what they’ve worked on in the past. There is a great story line supported with a humorous supporting cast. Tense situations are broken up by comedic action packed sequences. If you don’t see any other cartoon in the theater this year, please see this one.

As Above, So Below
Release Date: August 29, 2014
Director: John Erick Dowdle
Official Trailer On Website

A group of urban explorers decide to go into the catacombs beneath Paris. Meant to be a short, fun exploration of macabre history of France they discover instead a door way from city of the dead, into a maze of the damned.

Have you seen the Decent? Well, you should. They use a number of the same plot progression points in As Above, So Below. The basic plot is above. They go into the catacombs. What’s going on is they find a door that says ” Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here” and they step into hell… or do they?  From what I’ve seen you can’t tell if they are actually in hell or if they are imagining it. Then they go further and further into the ground. Each person is haunted by something from their past and they have to try to survive to get back to the surface. The movie is curious. I’m willing to give it a try but I have to wait until it’s out of the theater because my claustrophobia PTSD was triggered just watching the trailer. I love exploring but that whole squeezing through tight holes in the earth… yeah. I’ll skip that.

The director is respectable but still pretty new. John Erick Dowdle is responsible for the movie Quarantine but nothing else of note. The main character is played by Perdita Weeks who is a fairly well-known British actress. She’s been in Mid Summer Murders, a series my parents gush over. The male lead is Ben Feldman who has a pretty long list of credits. He played Travis in Cloverfield and Michael Ginsberg on Mad Men.

A Good Marriage
Release Date: October 3, 2014
Director:Peter Askin
Official Trailer

Darcy discovers that even in a good marriage, there are secrets. Her husband, Bob, goes on a business trip. While he is away she finds a box in the garage that tells her more than she ever wanted to know about the man she married. What would you do if after 25 years of marriage you discovered the person you love isn’t who you though you married?

Wow, watch the trailer. This movie is based on a short story written by Stephen King. The main character is Darcy and her husband Bob is secretly a serial killer. I’m not ruining anything by say that, this is all covered in the trailer. What would you do if you found out your husband is a serial killer? I would go to the police. NO WAFFLING. I would go to the police and put my cats in a carrier and take them with me. Yup, yup, yup. So what does Darcy do? She tries to hide that she knows. What the hell is that?

If she didn’t stay it would be a short movie. Altogether, it looks like a good movie. (Call the police…)

Release Date: October 3, 2014
Director: John R. Leonetti
Official Trailer

A couple, Mia and John, are expecting their first child. After a horrific night when their home is invaded, one of Mia’s antique dolls becomes possessed by a ghost. The ghost in the doll is a member of the satanic cult that invaded their home and died holding the antique. Now they have to figure out how to protect their family and get rid of the vengeful spirit.

If you haven’t seen the Conjuring, you might want to see that first. This movie is the prequel to the Conjuring. It’s a fictionalization of doll’s back story. The Annabelle case was pretty well known in the paranormal world because of the investigation by the Warrens and the museum of haunted items run by John Zaffis. The real doll looks very different though.

The movie looks pretty freaking scary, but not as much as The Conjuring. ( Hunt and Clap haunts me.)

The director is responisble for cinematography for The Mask and the TV show Sleepy Hallow. He’s directed a few movies but nothing that really needs to be mentioned ( Butterfly Effect 2). The writer, Gary Dauberman,  only works on horror movies, but nothing I’ve seen. They look pretty cheesy, I may have to watch a few. I can’t say much besides it doesn’t look like Puppet Master, which is a good thing. I love Puppet Master though, don’t get me wrong. The special effects make everything look very unsettling and I am going to enjoy getting scared. Then I am going to hide my dolls.

“No body leaves this place wit’out singin’ da blues.” – Albert Collins

AIBS Singing da blues

Thor wasn’t always fighting the evil that men do. Once upon a time he went by the name Dawson and he fixed cars.

Not all geek movies were obviously aimed at our particular audience in the 1980’s. They often tried to carry a group of teenagers that would reflect a spectrum of social groups and appeal to a wide audience. Adventures in Babysitting is a teeny bopper, action adventure, comedy. There is an underlying nerdy streak to this movie and it was really one of the first movies to have a blatantly nerdy GIRL. Maybe it was before it’s time or maybe it was a sign that things were changing in society.

What’s Adventures in Babysitting about?

AIBS Poster

Chris is supposed to be on the date of dreams but her boyfriend cancels at the last-minute. Having nothing better to do, a babysitting job pops up and she decides to take it because she needs the distraction. Meanwhile her friend Brenda gets stranded at the bus terminal in the city with no money and a cast of scary characters threatening her safety. Begging for her life, Brenda convinces Chris to drive into the city, with Sara and her brother to pick her up. Just as they are about to leave, everything starts to go wrong when Brad’s douchey friend Darryl black mails his way into joining the trip. A series of missteps leads them on an improbable adventure and through life-or-death situations.

The cast meets interesting characters along the way such as The Hook Handed Man; The Car Thief; The Blues Man; Inner City Gangs and even Thor.

Why do I love this movie? Sara.

AIBS Group

Sara is a little girl who is obsessed with comics and especially Thor. She wears a Thor helmet, a red cape and carries a plastic Mjolnir. Her devotion to the character is unflappable. Even when she comes face to face with the cranky Dawson, at Dawson’s garage she bows to him. Tapping her hammer on the groundshe greets him as a God. Her zeal wins over Dawson and his goodside comes out when Sara offers him her Thor helmet. She is convinced that because he doesn’t have his helmet, he’s not acting like himself. That melts the heart of the super cranky, muscle bound Thor look-a-like.

Sara was so relatable when I was a kid. I was into comics. I was into dressing up and being weird. Branded a tom boy, no one really understood that instead of Barbie, I wanted to read the Outsiders and Amethyst Princess of Gem World. (Seriously bad ass comic btw.) I had friends that were into elves and fantasy but they were more of the Anne McCaffrey vein. We would sometimes play pretend. There was always an elf, a dragon born and me, A NINJA! This character, Sara,  wasn’t truely outrageous, wasn’t wearing thigh high boots and wasn’t wearing a liatard. I could related to this little girl, about my age, being super excited about nerdy things.

Other things I love about this movie include singing the blues. That scene always stuck with me. Part of that is because my Mother loves to quote it, often. Recently, I had her over to hang out with her and my Dad. We wound up watching it because she went through my Netflix. It was in my recently watched catagory.

The Lords of Hell, scene on the train is like watching the dialogue after a Michael Jackson video between the two gangs.

The Doctor in the hospital. This was a social statement. He was overworked, nonplussed, and clearly taking some of his own meds.

Secret geek moment, Chris’ scarf reminds me of Dr. Who. It’s not exactly Tom Baker worthy but reallyclose.

Adventures in Babysitting is in my “infinately rewatchable” catagory. Other movies include, Ghostbusters; Shaun of the Dead; HotFuzz and Galaxy Quest. I love this movie and own it on DVD. It’s currently on Netflix. Enjoy.

Secret bonus… this scene reminds me of Jellyfish Princess. They did release this movie in Japan. Maybe it had an influence on the manga author.

This week I found three really mediocre looking sci-fi movies that are coming out. I apologize now. Before you read about them here are other things I think you should do with your time instead.

1. Tell your loved ones that you love them.
2. Plan for our inevitably bleak future by learning a skill like… farming or bee keeping!
3. Watch Bravest Warriors again!
4. Count how many times they say the word “but” or the homonym “butt” in the third Transformers movie.
5. Scroll up illegal cinemas files. (Aka… Watch MST3K’s lampooning of Overdrawn At the Memory Bank.)

What’s really sad is there are some great people involved in this first movie.

Release Date: April 17th, 2014
Director: Wally Pfister (Directorial Debut)
Official Trailer

Johnny Depp.That is all.

Just kidding.

Transcendence is the term for A.I. that is self-aware. Dr. Will Caster has been working on a project to create a collective A.I. that is also self-aware with independent processes. This idea has some scientific factions warring over whether it’s a good idea or even ethical to create such a thing. During that debate, an assassination attempt forces Evelyn Caster and Will’s friend Max Waters to make a hard decision. Dr. Caster’s body is dying but his brain is coming alive even more than before. They download his mind and personality, uploading it to the experimental version of the computer database that he had been creating. Unfortunately now they don’t know if they are dealing with Dr. Caster or a rogue computer as things get out of hand.

Transcendence is the first movie directed by Wally Pfister, but he’s been a director of cinematography or photography on tons of movies. To name a few, the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy; Momento and Scotland PA. Most of the main characters are played by the principle producers, Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman. Christopher Nolan also helped produce the movie since they have worked together so much. The plot seems to me a mixture of the Matrix and Ghost in the Machine. It’s very strange and took quite a bit of digging to figure out the exact plot. I suggest watching the trailer and then reading the Wikipedia. I WILL see the movie because I love most of the people involved but, it looks a little shaky.

Earth to Echo
Release Date: April 25, 2014
Director: Dave Green
Official Trailer

Yeah… the trailer TELLS YOU NOTHING! It appears a lot like Super 8. That movie was pretty cool, like the Goonies meets Aliens. What I have found is that the movie is being made by Disney. Their official description is pretty interesting, they have my attention.

A group of young friends start receiving messages through their cell phones. The messages are encrypted and so they decide to run off on their own to figure out the secret meaning of the messages.

Welcome to Yesterday
Release Date: February 28th, 2014
Director: Dean Isrealite
Official Trailer

Did you see the Butterfly Effect? Have you seen any movie ever about time travel? Yeah, you’ve seen this movie.

A group of teenagers discover that they are going to make a time machine, and then they make it. Going back and forth through time they make all their wildest dreams come true and enjoy a concert on the way. When they get back they discover that they’ve messed up the timeline and horrible things have occurred. They have to go back and make sure that they never change time!

The premise is over trite and bland. The movie is for teenagers and ignores the fact that these same teenagers would know from popular media to be REALLY careful while traveling through time. Yeah,  from the plot they screw things up pretty badly and then have to fix it. Really what they’ve done is created a paradox or… a TEMPORAL PARASOCKS!
